Last year, Netflix’s Squid Game took the world by storm, becoming the streaming platform’s most successful show to date. After a runaway success on the streaming site, the drama was promptly taken up for a second season. This time Hwang Dong-hyuk is creating a satire-based sequel to the success of ‘Squid Game,’ which has been dubbed ‘The Best Show On The Planet.’

Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator of Squid Game, is working on a spoof called ”The Best Show on the Planet’ about the making of Netflix’s Squid Game, which became a global hit overnight. The Korean director made the announcement in an exclusive interview with Deadline’s Disruptors Magazine about the Squid Game.

Hwang highlighted that the project is still in its early stages, with little information available, but that the satirical comedy would be based on his personal experience of being thrust into the spotlight. Hwang is now working on three projects: The Best Show on the Planet, a feature film based on a novel by renowned Italian writer Umberto Eco, and the second season of Squid Game.

While the latter hasn’t been officially greenlit, Hwang is putting a lot of thought into it, generating ideas and imagining new games and characters. Hwang’s aiming for a Halloween 2024 release, and he recently revealed to Deadline that fan-favorite Gi-hun would return, along with Lee Byung-shadowy hun’s Front Man.

“Season 1’s success has given me an immense amount of pressure and I am having nightmares about the reception for Season 2 not being so good.”

Squid Game was without a doubt the biggest smash of 2021, reaching more than 100 million homes faster than any other show and topping Netflix’s most-watched list in 94 countries at its peak. Hopefully, Squid Game 2 will also come sooner than later, but we’re not getting it next year. Are you pumped to watch it? For further updates stay tuned to Thirsty.
