Dick Vitale is a college basketball icon. Dicky V’s bombastic personality and over-the-top expressions have made him a fixture for generations of college hoops junkies. Dick has been putting up a fierce battle with cancer that has kept his time at the broadcast table limited.

Vitale underwent a successful vocal cord surgery yesterday at Massachusetts General Hospital. Vitale remained there overnight for observation. The surgery appears to have been a success.

Dick posted on his Facebook page that the procedure has his doctors feeling confident. Vitale will now have to go on four weeks of total voice rest while he heals. That may be Vitale’s biggest challenge of all.

“Dr Zeitels told me yesterday that the surgery was a challenge but because of his equipment that he was able to complete what his plan was in going into surgery. The voice rest was a key he said in clearing up the inflammation which allowed him to proceed with the procedure to treat the dysplasia & the ulcerated lesions on my vocal cords. He was very confident after the 3 hours of intense surgery that he was able to achieve his goal. Now he said it is mandatory that I go on 4 weeks of total voice rest to help the healing process. Also it will be vial in post recovery to have my situation managed by Dr Zeitels.

He feels optimistic that if I follow his plan (which I will) that he will get me back on courtside to do what I truly love talking college hoops during the 2022-23. season.”
