It’s an exciting day for fans as in a surprise announcement, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman revealed that Hugh will play Wolverine in Deadpool 3.

On Tuesday, Sept. 27, the stars broke the big news in a funny video shared by Ryan on social media. “Hey everyone, we’re extremely sad to have missed D23, but we’ve been working very hard on the next Deadpool film for a good long while now,” Ryan said at the beginning of the video.

“I’ve had to really search my soul on this one. His first appearance in the MCU obviously needs to feel special. We need to stay true to the character, find new depth, motivation, meaning,” Ryan continued.

He went on to describe how difficult it is to create a fresh Deadpool film that sticks out from the crowd before disclosing the “one idea” the team had, which is to bring in Wolverine.

“Hey, Hugh, you want to play Wolverine one more time?” he inquired as Hugh came by carelessly behind him. Yeah, sure, Ryan,” Jackman said as he went up a flight of stairs, his head out of view.

“I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston played as a “Coming Hughn” graphic gradually came into view as the video came to a close. The Deadpool logo suddenly surfaced, but Wolverine’s claws soon sliced it. The last image displayed the film’s scheduled release date: September 6, 2024.

Hugh played Wolverine, the Marvel comic book character with Adamantium metal claws, for the first time in the 2000 film X-Men. He went on to play him in nine further movies, the most recent of which being 2017’s Logan. Meanwhile, Ryan debuted Deadpool in 2016 and a sequel came out in 2018. The actors and characters will appear on the same screen again after this. Ryan originally played Deadpool in the 2009 X-Men spinoff X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which revealed Wolverine’s origin story.
