Adam Sandler’s New Basketball Movie Left Him With A Horrible Groin Injury

Adam Sandler was on Saturday Night Live from 1990 to 1995 before moving on to feature in a number of Hollywood blockbusters. Adam has always loved hoops and implemented other sports into many of his films. The Longest Yard star recently revealed that his new Netflix basketball film ‘Hustle’ left him with a terrible injury that is still bothering him.

According to ET, Adam Sandler’s new Netflix basketball film, Hustle, left him with a terrible groin injury that is still bothering him over a year later. The new sports drama stars the famed comic as a former basketball scout who tries to revitalize his career by recruiting an overseas player with a problematic background to play in the NBA.

That player is played by the real-life Spanish big man for the Utah Jazz Juancho Hernangómez, who will be making his acting debut. Sandler stars as Stanley Sugarman in Hustle, alongside Hernangómez as Bo Cruz. Queen Latifah plays Stanley’s wife Teresa, Ben Foster as his boss, Mara Botto as Bo’s mother Paola, and Robert Duvall plays an undisclosed part.

Sandler signed on to act in the sports film in 2020, with NBA superstar LeBron James producing and Jeremiah Zagar directing from a screenplay written by Taylor Materne and Will Fetters. Later that year, filming on-site in various parts of Philadelphia and surrounding areas began.

Sandler spoke at the Hustle premiere about his experience filming the basketball films amid real NBA players, which he described as “humiliating” because his skills do not compare. Sandler would frequently play basketball with his professional co-stars while filming until he pulled his groin in a bad way. Sandler says he’s still limping about a year later owing to the persistent injuries. 

“I played with everybody, all the guys, and it’s humiliating, you know? You take a shot in front of them you see how flat your shot is you see how dumb you look you have no form. Then, when they shoot, you’re like, ‘Yeah, yeah, alright, that’s how you’re supposed to play.’ We had some of that going, but that’s before I popped my groin. There was one night my groin couldn’t take it anymore then I said, ‘I guess I’m gonna have to watch these guys go.’ It’s been a year already and I’m still limping around like a fool… it’s horrible.”

In the film, Sandler’s character only briefly shoots hoops. Hustle is a different beast entirely since Sandler was playing basketball with genuine NBA stars, with whom he clearly struggled to keep up. Anthony Edwards, Trae Young, Jordan Clarkson, Khris Middleton, Aaron Gordon, Kyle Lowry, Seth Curry, Tobias Harris, Tyrese Maxey, Matisse Thybulle, and John Wick 3 star Boban Marjanovi were all seen in the Hustle trailer.
