Johnny Depp rose to notoriety as Captain Jack Sparrow in the Walt Disney swashbuckler film series Pirates of the Caribbean. It was recently stated that fans may never see Johnny as Jack Sparrow again. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has now emphasized that everything depends on the future.

The producer of the Pirates of the Caribbean films, Jerry Bruckheimer, has spoken out on actor Johnny Depp’s future with the franchise. Speaking with the U.K.’s The Sunday Times, Bruckheimer promoted his new film Top Gun: Maverick and was questioned about the status of another Pirates movie. The fifth film, titled Dead Men Tell No Tales, was released in theatres in 2017. The series was previously rumored to be revived with Margot Robbie in the starring role.

Bruckheimer confirmed that the female-led movie is still in the works, as is a version sans the 31-year-old Robbie: “Yes. We’re talking to Margot Robbie. We are developing two Pirates scripts — one with her, one without.” When asked if Depp will return, Bruckheimer told the newspaper, “Not at this point. The future is yet to be decided.”

Depp also made it clear during the trial that he will not work for the Disney franchise again. It remains to be seen whether a massive payday will change that sentiment.

Depp is now involved in a legal fight with ex-wife Amber Heard in Fairfax, Virginia, where he is suing her for $50 million in defamation for an op-ed she published for The Washington Post in December 2018 about surviving domestic abuse. Though she did not identify Depp by name in the article, Depp alleges it harmed his career and cost him a $22.5 million payout for a sixth Pirates film, among other possible blockbuster roles.

Heard has testified about several instances of alleged domestic abuse, as well as several instances in which she claims he sexually attacked her throughout their relationship. Depp has testified that his “goal is the truth” as he works to clear his reputation in this trial, which is being aired live across many platforms.

Fans would want to see him return as Captain Jack Sparrow, but as Jerry stated, it all depends on the future. Let’s see what happens. To get the latest updates, keep an eye on Thirsty.
