Charles Oliveira was scheduled to defend the UFC Lightweight title against Justin Gaethje at tomorrow night’s UFC 274. Unfortunately for Charles, he lost the title before a single punch was thrown. Oliveira weighed in at a half-pound over the 155-pound limit.

UFC was forced to strip Charles Oliveira of the championship. The match will still go on. If Oliveira wins, the championship will remain vacant. If Gaethje wins, he will be awarded the belt.

This isn’t the first problem Charles Oliveira has had making weight. As a featherweight, he missed multiple weigh-ins. This is his first time doing so since returning to the lightweight division in 2017, according to MMA Junkie.

Fortunately for fight fans, the bout will still go on as planned. An Oliveira victory will likely see him having to defeat an interim champion if he wants to reclaim the title. If Justin Gaethje pulls it out, none of this will have mattered.

This is one of the more anticipated title matches in recent UFC history. Sadly, only one competitor will be fighting for a championship. Oliveira will still do what he can to stop Gaethje from taking the title that rightfully belongs to him.

The future of the UFC lightweight title is now in flux. Justin Gaethje can solve that problem with a victory tomorrow night. The road back to the title will be a little more complicated for Charles Oliveira.
