Update: Chris Rock followed this up with a pretty good joke about Will Smith. Also, the identity of Dave Chappelle’s attacker has been revealed.

Original: Dave Chappelle does not require an introduction as a stand-up comedian, as his wide range of material and superb timing have made him a big success. Chappelle has been dealing with all sorts of controversies ever since last year. Posts from attendees at Dave Chappelle’s Hollywood Bowl Show, which is part of the “Netflix Is A Joke Festival,” flooded social media recently after the legendary comedian was attacked on stage.

Deadline reports that someone ambushed Chappelle while he was on stage. Attendees’ phones were confiscated at the gate meaning that video and even photos are scarce. There is, however, one video which appears to show the man smashing into someone holding a microphone, presumably that man was Chappelle.

After getting their phones back, attendees posted videos outside the show that appeared to show the alleged assailant being loaded into an ambulance. Another person recorded the end of the show which featured Chappelle and Jamie Foxx, who apparently rushed on stage to assist in apprehending the man who was chasing Chappelle.

The headliner said: “Whenever you’re in trouble, Jamie Foxx will show up in a sheriff’s hat.”

Jamie Foxx responded: “I thought that was part of the show.”

Chappelle replied: “I grabbed the back of that N*****’s head. His hair was spongey!”

Later, the comedian struck a note of both surprise and levity when he said: “I’ve been doing this for 35 years. I just stomped a N***** backstage. I’ve always wanted to do that.”

Foxx chimed in on a more serious note: “Listen, I just want to say…this man is an absolute genius. We’ve got to make sure we protect him at all times. For every comedian who comes out here, this means everything. You’re a genius. You’re a legend, and we’re not going to let nothing happen to you.”

“Everybody compose yourselves,” Chappelle said to the audience after Foxx left the stage, possibly thinking about all the nerves and emotions as fans exited the show. Netflix representatives did not respond to a request for comment. The following video contains explicit language, but you can check it out below.
