A man wearing a gas mask threw a smoke grenade into the New York City subway system in Brooklyn before opening fire this morning. At least five people have been shot. The actor is still at large.

The shooting occurred during this morning’s rush hour, when there was a critical mass of people using the city’s transit systems. NYPD officials are currently investigating the incident. The attack occurred at the 36th Street & Fourth Avenue station in the Sunset Park neighborhood, according to NBC 4 New York.

At least thirteen people were taken to local hospitals. It is unknown if all of them were shot. Images from the subway platform show a chaotic scene.

The shooter is described is a male standing 5’5″ and weighing 180 pounds. He fled the scene on foot and has not yet been apprehended. Undetonated devices were reportedly found at the scene.

Social media photos show bloodied victims laying on the platform. A heavy law enforcement presence was also on the scene. Many of those wounded jumped into other trains to get away from the violence.

Local schools have been placed on lockdown. The NYPD, ATF, and Homeland Security are teaming up to investigate. Police have advised all citizens to avoid the area.
