Sony and Kirkbi, the company behind the Lego Group, have announced a major investment into the massively popular game Fortnite’s creator company Epic Games. Fortnite needs no introduction, and if you need one then you might want to ask anyone under the age of 25 what this wildly successful and industry changing battle royale game is all about.

Epic Games announced on their website on Monday that two mega corporations are investing $1 billion each into the Unreal engine and Fortnite developer. The Unreal Engine, which was created by Epic games, is responsible for several popular games.

Epic founder Tim Sweeney said that the said funding will go directly towards the company’s endeavors to expand its footprint in the metaverse space. A short while prior to the latest announcement, Epic announced a partnership with Lego to build a child-friendly metaverse project.

“As a creative entertainment company, we are thrilled to invest in Epic to deepen our relationship in the metaverse field, a space where creators and users share their time.” said Sony’s Chairman, President, and CEO Kenichiro Yoshida.

“We are also confident that Epic’s expertise, including their powerful game engine, combined with Sony’s technologies, will accelerate our various efforts such as the development of new digital fan experiences in sports and our virtual production initiatives.”

Sony previously invested $250 million into Epic in July 2020 and additionally $200 million in April 2021. We can expect a significant shift in the gaming industry with Sony’s latest investment. The company operates the Epic Games Store, much like Steam for digital PC game purchases, and has created the Gears of War franchise.
