George Clinton is a legendary American singer, songwriter, bandleader, and record producer. Clinton is regarded as one of the foremost innovators of funk music, alongside James Brown and Sly Stone. Eddie Murphy is reportedly in talks to star in a biopic about George Clinton.

Eddie Murphy, an Academy Award nominee in his own right, is in talks to play funk legend and Parliament-Funkadelic leader George Clinton in an upcoming biopic. Clinton, dubbed the “Godfather of Funk,” is a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winner, and widely regarded as one of the musical genre’s most important innovators, alongside James Brown and Sly Stone.

According to Deadline, the planned documentary will follow Clinton’s life and legacy from his childhood in 1940s North Carolina to the formation of his highly influential bands Parliament and Funkadelic in the late 1960s. The film will also look at Clinton and the bands’ influence on the future of hip-hop and artists such as Tupac Shakur, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Outkast, and the Wu-Tang Clan.

Murphy will serve as producer alongside John Davis and Catherine Davis through their Davis Entertainment banner, in addition to playing the iconic musician on-screen. The project is currently in its early stages as the filmmakers work to secure the rights with Clinton before hiring writers and putting the film on the market. Last year, Murphy signed a three-picture, first-look film deal with Amazon Studios.

Murphy recently received critical acclaim for another true life story, Netflix’s “Dolemite Is My Name,” in which he played Blaxploitation film star Rudy Ray Moore. Murphy starred in “Coming 2 America,” the long-awaited sequel to the 1988 comedy, after his Emmy-nominated return to “Saturday Night Live,” a platform that helped launch his career.

He’ll next be seen in the Netflix comedy “You People,” directed by Kenya Barris, alongside Jonah Hill, before reprising his iconic role as Alex Foley in “Beverly Hills Cop 4.” WME and Skip Brittenham represent Murphy. To get the latest updates, keep an eye on Thirsty.
