The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson as the latest incarnation of the title Caped Crusader, premiered in theatres across the United States on March 4th, 2022. The film also stars Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Colin Farrell as The Penguin, and Paul Dano as The Riddler, and recasts several of Gotham’s most well-known characters.

A deleted clip from The Batman has been published by Warner Bros., hinting at a interesting direction for the well-known character. The sequence is one of two in which the Joker appears, but it was deleted from the final cut of The Batman because Reeves felt it repeated material and muddied the plot.

In fact, Reeves almost removed both Joker scenes because he wasn’t sure if he wanted the Joker to play a major role in Batman’s huge rebirth. The Joker scene in The Batman that made it to the final cut depicts him forging an alliance with the Riddler, whilst the deleted scene has him talking to Batman and giving him advice on how to catch the Riddler.

As a result, the relationship between the Joker and Batman is already formed, as the Joker is safely imprisoned, despite not yet identifying as the Joker. This Joker (portrayed by Barry Keoghan of The Eternals) is severely malformed, with a weird Elon Musk hairdo and scars and burns all over his hands.

Many fans saw the Joker scene that made the final cut as a cynical tease, possibly placed into the script by producers, the kind of fan service spectators expect from Marvel movies. After all, the character has been played to death by some very outstanding actors, like Jared Leto. Heath Ledger’s legendary performance has been echoed far too many times, according to fans who mocked the newly-released deleted sequence.
