Update: Jussie Smollett will be release from jail after just 6 days behind bars.

Original: Jussie Smollett has chosen to give up on eating food while behind the bars and he has made it clear that he’ll stick to not eating for close to 5 more weeks. The reasoning behind Smollett’s fasting decision seem to be spiritual.

Smollett was sentenced to 150 days in a jail for faking hate crime in Chicago. This sentence also included 30 months felony probation, $120,106 restitution to the city of Chicago and will pay a $25,000 fine.

Sources close to TMZ told them, Jussie has eaten anything since Lent started on March 3, that is a full week before his sentence to serve in Cook County Jail began and he has remained to continue fasting behind the bars.

The only thing Jussie has ingested is water since his sentence started, the outlet was told. Jussie plans on keeping it that way until Lent ends on April 17, Easter Sunday. He is said to be taking things “one day at a time.”

However, sources have made it clear that Smollett is in good spirits, they pointed out that this act of fasting by The “Empire” actor is in no manner a hunger strike or protest to his imprisonment. During his sentencing has repeatedly clarified that he is not suicidal.

Present day marks nearly two week into the fast for Jussie and the sources confirmed that he is physically okay and in “good spirits.” Sheriff’s office said they are not allowed to comment on religious or spiritual practices of individuals but jail staff monitors all inmates to “ensure their health and wellness.”

A short while ago, Freddie Gibbs was asked about his views on Smollett’s five-month jail sentence to which he said Jussie belongs in jail for his orchestrate a hoax. Gibbs’ opinion comes in sharp contrast to Taraji P. Henson, who came out in complete defense of her co-star.
