South Park is one of the few television shows that can always remain topical. The show has an insanely quick production time. That means series creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone were the first scripted television show to address Vladimir Putin’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.

This week’s episode provided viewers with a harsh mockery of Putin. The show also addressed and thoroughly grilled the idea that he could use nuclear weapons. No punches were pulled as the show compared today’s global climate to that of the Cold War.

The kids at South Park elementary were horrified as they were forced to take part in old-school nuclear bomb drills. Butters was forced to face a Russian in an equestrian competition that had parents treating it like an actual war. The Cold War-era parallels were not subtle.

The evisceration of Russia’s tactics and the hysteria surrounding it are just what South Park fans expect. Several specials were created throughout the various stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. Nothing is ever off limits.

The moment of levity is a nice break from the news coverage of the war. Images of cities being shelled are common. Social media has become an electronic PTSD trigger as users share photos, video, and stories from Ukraine.

The South Park episode probably won’t do much to change any world leaders’ opinions. It is nice to know that there is still some comedy out there that isn’t afraid to be topical. We can always count on Matt and Trey for that.
