It’s not everyday that you see a massive pile of dead chickens show up in your field, or is it? Well, that is exactly what happened in Sampson County of North Carolina.

A mound of dead birds was photographed by a WRAL viewer, who posted the photo on Twitter. The photo was taken in a field, surrounded by a wooded area off Herring Road in Sampson Country, WRAL reported Sunday.

The North Carolina Department of Agriculture said it had launched an investigation into the incident. The department has yet to confirm who dumped such a huge pile of dead birds in a field.

WRAL spoke to an anonymous truck driver who said the company he works for was hired to transport the dead birds to the Sampson County Landfill in Roseboro. The person said he works for Rob’s Trucking Company.

He said Valley Proteins in Rose Hill hired the trucking company to do the job, adding that he could not say for sure they were responsible for dumping the pile in open fields.
