The San Francisco 49ers lost a heartbreaking NFC Championship game to Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday. A late-game interception by San Francisco QB Jimmy Garoppolo sealed the Rams’ trip to the Super Bowl. It might be the end of a memorable run for the 49ers quarterback.

Jimmy Garoppolo has been with the 49ers for the last five seasons. Jimmy led the 49ers to the Super Bowl once before. This year he was just one victory away. Garoppolo has faced his share of critics, but you can’t argue with results. Despite the success, the team may be ready to move on.

Garoppolo was heartbroken after the game. That didn’t mean he didn’t spend some of his emotions on reflecting on the positive. The moment hadn’t fully sunk in as Jimmy G considered his future after the game, according to CBS Sports.

“It was tough. It was an emotional locker room, like you’d expect. It’s a tough one. … (The emotions) hit pretty hard in the locker room. It’s one of those things you gotta be glad it happened, just smile from it, think about the good things. We’ll see what happens in these next couple days, weeks, whatever, but I love this team.”

San Francisco will likely trade or cut Garoppolo before the start of next season. A $26.95 million won’t work with the 49ers plans. The franchise will likely make a move to save that money so they can stay under the salary cap while reloading.

Joe Burrow and Matthew Stafford will get the limelight in this year’s Super Bowl. Jimmy Garoppolo came within minutes of taking one of those spots. If it ever happens again, it probably won’t be as a member of the San Francisco 49ers.
