The Undertaker Discloses Why The Deadman Outlasted American Badass Persona

The Undertaker put his body on the line for the enjoyment of fans and most of them always appreciated that. This commitment has earned him legendary status, but it has its drawbacks. Fans have seen him in quite a few iterations and now The Undertaker has explained why his Deadman persona outlasted The American Badass gimmick.

The Deadman was a fixture of WWE television for over thirty years, and he continued to be a highlight of WWE television since the early 90s. During the early 2000s, he introduced The American Badass gimmick, which breathed new life into his career.

The American Badass gimmick lasted from 2000 to 2003, with a brief appearance during his feud with AJ Styles back in 2020 and his recent NXT appearance. While speaking on Six Feet Under, the WWE Hall of Famer was asked if his career would have had as much longevity if he was The American Badass for three decades. The Undertaker noted that was not possible as the Badass had a limited shelf life due to the limited scope of the character’s directions.

“I don’t think so. I don’t think it has 30 years of legs. It excels pretty fast, but I don’t see 30 years without some kind of…it doesn’t matter what the character is, you have to evolve. With something like the American Badass, there’s not a whole lot of places to evolve to. I’m a big badass biker who gets in fights and talks sh*t. There’s just not a lot of places to go with that.

Where, The Undertaker, the original character, there are all kind of different things you can do with that. I don’t think it has 30-year legs. I took more bumps as American Badass than I did as Undertaker. I actually took more bumps at the end of my career than the beginning. It all worked out the way it was supposed to.”

The Undertaker also recently claimed that people accuse him of ruining their childhoods. Regardless, The Phenom will forever be regarded as one of the true GOATs of the world of professional wrestling and that’s never changing.
