John Cena’s return to WWE is always accompanied by a ton of excitement. This year it appears he will wrestle Austin Theory at the show of shows, but that wasn’t always the case.

Wrestling News reported behind their Patreon paywall that there was a time when John Cena was “penciled in” to face Logan Paul. This makes sense, because there was a time when The Maverick was throwing out some subtle hints about facing John Cena in a singles match.

Sometime in the fall, WWE had Cena penciled in for a match against Logan Paul. In fact, Cena teased this on social media and Paul has stated that he would love to have a WrestleMania match with him. That was the match that was planned as of December but by January they pivoted to Logan Paul vs. Seth Rollins.

WWE is trying to build Austin Theory as a future main event name for the company. Working with John Cena at WrestleMania will give him a huge rub, and push him with the fans. A John Cena vs Logan Paul match might have been a massive marquee showdown, but it wouldn’t have done much to really help the future of the company.

John Cena wants to help WWE Superstars who will help carry the company for years to come. After all, he can no longer wrestle every week, because even now he is in Australia filming a new movie with Zac Efron. He will be back to WWE for a RAW at the end of March, and he is also expected to face Austin Theory at WrestleMania 39.

Logan Paul is slated to take on Seth Rollins at WrestleMania 39, which is likely to be a banger of a match as well. We will have to see if Logan Paul and John Cena ever collide in the ring, but this is certainly an interesting thing to note on the road to WrestleMania.

What’s your take on these cancelled WrestleMania plans? Sounds off in the comments!

Let’s get to know each other. Me? Well, I have a master’s degree in Journalism from Marshall University, but I don’t really like to talk about that. I was a stand-up comedian for eight years, but I don’t really like to talk about that either. I write a lot. I once worked for a company that writes blurbs for online gambling games. Those paid $.75 each. So, if you frequent that kind of thing, then you’re welcome for the description for Biker Chicken Slots or Crazy Granny’s Scratchers. I wish I had more to tell, but due to my crippling anxiety and Tourette’s Syndrome, that has become increasingly worse over the years, I tend to keep to myself.
