Anthony Ciccone, the older brother of pop icon Madonna, has passed away at the age of 66. The sad news was shared on Saturday by musician Joe Henry, who is married to Madonna’s sister Melanie Ciccone.

Henry took to his Instagram to share a black-and-white photo of his late family member. “My brother-in-law, Anthony Gerard Ciccone, exited this earthly plane last evening,” he wrote.

“I’ve known him since I was 15, in the spring of our lives in Michigan so many years now gone. As brother Dave Henry (who took this photograph) notes here, Anthony was a complex character; and god knows: we tangled in moments, as true brothers can. But I loved him, and understood him better than I was sometimes willing to let on.”

Henry continued that while “trouble fades,” family remains – with “hands reached” across the table. “Farewell, then, brother Anthony. I want to think the god your blessed mother (and mine) believed in has her there, waiting to receive you,” he added.

“At least for today, no one shall dissuade me from this vision.”

Madonna, one of eight children, was raised in Michigan, where her elder brother is believed to have lived when he passed away. In 1963, at the age of 33, their mother Madonna Ciccone passed away after a battle with breast cancer.

Anthony had a history of alcoholism and was reportedly homeless for a while. He reportedly spent some time living beneath a bridge in Michigan.

This news brings a sad moment for the Ciccone family, as they mourn the loss of their beloved family member. May his soul rest in peace.
