Guillermo del Toro truly impressed fans with his 2004 cult classic film, Hellboy. It even got a sequel in 2008, called Hellboy: The Golden Army and both films received a lot of critical praise. However, it got a reboot in 2016, which was critically panned. Now it seems the series will get yet another reboot.
According to a report by Deadline, Millennium Media has confirmed that Hellboy: The Crooked Man will enter production next month in Bulgaria. This will mark the second time the character got a reboot.
The upcoming film, directed by Brian Taylor – recognized for his work on the adrenaline-fueled action film “Crank” featuring Jason Statham – has yet to reveal its lead actor for the titular character, previously portrayed by Ron Perlman and David Harbour.
Of particular note is that the script for the forthcoming movie was penned by Mike Mignola, the original creator of the comics, in collaboration with Chris Golden. According to The Hollywood Reporter, both have worked on the script for the 2019 reboot.
According to Deadline’s report, it is not clear what format The Crooked Man film will take. However, Discussing Film, the original source that reported on the film’s production, suggests that it will be a live-action movie. Notably, The Crooked Man was originally the title of a 2008 Hellboy comic.
“The new film will see Hellboy and a rookie BPRD agent stranded in 1950s rural Appalachia. There, they discover a small community haunted by witches, led by a local devil with a troubling connection to Hellboy’s past: the Crooked Man.”
“The Crooked Man is a departure from all previous Hellboy films where Mike Mignola and the creator of the comics will finally shepherd an authentic version of his stories and characters in film form,” said Millennium Media president Jeffrey Greenstein. “This is the first in the series of films that will captivate audiences in familiar (and new) ways.” A release date for Hellboy: The Crooked Man has yet to be announced. We’ll have to see when it will release.
