Jake Roberts Once Thought He Was Dying During WWE Match

Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts, a WWE Hall of Famer, has been a part of AEW since 2020, bringing his wealth of experience to the company. Prior to joining AEW, Roberts made a name for himself in WWE, where his distinctive cerebral style of promos was known to strike fear into the hearts of his opponents. He has faced many stars in his career, including Lanny Poffo. In fact, Roberts thought he was dying during a match with Poffo.

Having spent many years working for WWE, Jake Roberts is intimately familiar with how Vince McMahon operates. In the past, Roberts has even criticized McMahon for his tendency to humiliate people in the company. Nevertheless, Roberts has many fascinating stories to share with fans from his illustrious career as a professional wrestler.

Following the recent passing of wrestling legend “Leaping” Lanny Poffo, many of his colleagues and peers have come forward to share their fond memories of him. One such tribute came from Jake “The Snake” Roberts, who recounted a painful and embarrassing moment that he shared with Poffo during a wrestling match.

While speaking on his podcast, The Snake Pit, Jake Roberts recalled having a match with Poffo at Madison Square Garden while with the WWF. Poffo was in the middle of his “Genius” gimmick when he debuted a new move against Roberts, which didn’t go well

He came to me and said, ‘I want to do this new move I’ve got.’ I’m like, ‘Okay, what is it?’ He said, ‘You’ll be on the floor, I’ll jump up on the top rope, and then I’ll jump off on you and give you the Double Axe Handles.’ Okay, no problem.”

The Snake continued, “He jumps up on the rope and slips and falls, driving both of his knees into my kidneys. I was on my hands and knees when he hit me. I thought he’d killed me. It burned so bad, it burned like somebody stuck a hot iron inside of my back man, just frying my insides.” 

Jake Roberts also believes modern pro wrestling took out a big tradition that used to be the norm back in the day. Roberts will continue to share more bizarre stories about his larger-than-life experiences and fans can’t wait to hear them.
