Taylor Swift and Kanye West’s feud has been the buzz of the music industry for quite some time. Kanye West stormed the stage at the MTV Video Music Awards 14 years ago to interrupt Taylor Swift and declare Beyoncé’s ‘Single Ladies’ one of the greatest videos of all time. It’s been a long time and it now appears that someone who was present there still have some regrets over not defending Swift.

Taylor Lautner was at the forefront as everything began to unravel, and he was also dating Swift at the time. The Twilight actor and his current wife, Taylor Dome, discussed his experiences that night on their podcast ‘The Squeeze.’  Dome asked Lautner what career moment he would like to recreate if he could and apparently did not expect him to name this time in entertainment history.

“Probably the 2009 VMAs when I presented the award to Taylor,” he added, to which his wife replied, dying with laughter, that she was simply “deceased.” Though their relationship lasted only a few months, Lautner and Swift just so happened to be dating on that particular night. Additionally, Lautner was the one who gave Swift her award for “You Belong with Me” for Best Female Video.

Everyone is aware that West rushed the stage with a message, and the rest is history. There’s a reason Lautner isn’t a part of our collective memories of that night even though he was present. The reason is that he merely stood there. As he explained it, “I was unaware the Kanye thing was not a skit.”

He went on to say that they’d recently gone public as a couple, and that after presenting her with the award, he moved back approximately five feet to allow her to deliver her acceptance speech. “In the middle of giving her thank-you speech, Kanye jumps up onto the stage,” Lautner recalled. So he took a step back, assuming everything was okay and that his partner was laughing along with whatever shenanigans were going on. He also explained why he can be seen laughing behind them.

I can barely hear it. I can’t see them. I’m just assuming that this whole thing was a practiced and rehearsed skit. Because why else would Kanye West be jumping up on the stage, interrupting Taylor Swift? It just didn’t make sense.

If you look back at it, I’m actually caught like laughing, giggling at him. I can’t hear them, but this is probably really funny right now. He jumped off, she finished [and] the second she turned back around and I saw her face for the first time, I was like, ‘Oh. No, that wasn’t good.’

Later that night, Beyoncé attempted to make things right. She invited Swift back up to the stage after winning Video of the Year for “Single Ladies” to finish her acceptance speech. Both Lautner and Swift have since moved on in their romantic relationships. Keep an eye on Thirsty for the most latest updates.
