Stephen Colbert addressed the recent detention of several of his staffers by Capitol Police on last night’s ‘Late Show.’ Several employees of the show were picked up by the USCP after they were accused of unlawful entry into a Congressional office building last week. The late-night comedian had some fun with the strange situation.

Nine Colbert staffers were busted by Capitol Police as the crew set up pre-arranged interviews involving Triumph the Insult Comic Dog. After the interviews were shot, the crew stuck around to film more comedic elements of the sketch. AT that point, they were arrested and detained.

Stephen Colbert laughed the situation off when he addressed it on ‘The Late Show.’ He was dumbfounded that anyone would compare puppetry to the events of January 6, when rioters stormed the Capitol in an attempt to overturn Donald Trump’s loss in the 2020 Presidential election. Colbert explained that they had all the proper clearances and were guests.

“Triumph and my folks shot for two days in Congressional offices across the street from the Capitol building. They went through security clearance, shot all day Wednesday, all day Thursday, invited into the offices of the Congresspeople they were interviewing, and that’s very important. You have to invite Triumph in. He works on Dracula rules.

Now, end of day two, Thursday evening, after they finished their interviews, they were doing some last-minute puppetry and ‘jokey make-em-ups’ in a hallway when Triumph and my folks were approached and detained by the Capitol Police, which actually isn’t that surprising. The Capitol Police are much more cautious than they were, say, 18 months ago, and for a very good reason. If you don’t know what that reason is, I know what news network you watch.”

Colbert understood the extra caution being taken by the Capitol Police. Rather than becoming upset about it, he turned it into comedy. Stephen and his staffers will be just fine, and he doesn’t blame USCP for what happened at all.
