The right wing’s war against Disney continues to heat up. In Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis has made the beloved entertainment giant public enemy number one. Disney World, one of the largest employers in the state, is facing sanctions based on the fact that the company believes in LGBTQ rights.

The Republican Party is a party of trends. Never one to be outdone, controversial Missouri Senator Josh Hawley is taking things even further. Hawley said he plans to introduce legislation that will strip Disney of copyright protection over many of their most beloved intellectual properties.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Hawley is positioning the move as a stand against woke corporations. Hawley says that the current copyright laws allow creators to protect their work for far too long. The Senator also targeted Disney’s alleged progressive agenda.

“No more handouts for woke corporations.”

The copyright on Mickey Mouse is central to the debate. The original protection should have long since expired. It has been extended twice since 1984.

If Josh Hawley gets his way, Mickey Mouse will enter the public domain. The wholesome character would be free game for anyone who wanted to profit from its use. Time will tell if Hawley’s efforts to prevent wokeness would backfire in that situation.
