Amber Heard and Johnny Depp, the angry ex-lovers, are presently locked in a vicious legal battle in Virginia. After the Aquaman actress claimed to be a survivor of abuse in a 2018 Washington Post piece, Disney terminated Depp’s contract, putting an end to the Captain Jack Sparrow actor’s career. Johnny Depp said he felt betrayed by Disney’s decision to part ways because he wanted to end Pirates of the Caribbean the right way.

Johnny Depp couldn’t help but take the loss of his role as Captain Jack Sparrow personally. Depp has since parted ways with Disney after committing to five feature films in the Pirates of the Caribbean series, a move he attributes to allegations levelled against him by ex-wife Amber Heard. Depp, who is now suing Heard for defamation, previously addressed his comments that he would never return to that role, even if Disney offered hundreds of millions of dollars.

In new testimony, Depp explained why he believes the path back to Pirates of the Caribbean has been destroyed. He described his frustration with Heard’s allegations following him for years, with one negative story after another appearing in the press.

The actor also discussed how he found out he had been fired by Disney just days after Heard described herself as a victim of domestic violence in an op-ed for The Washington Post. As he had previously spoken with Disney about doing Pirates 6, here’s how Depp described his feelings when he found out the studio was dropping him from the franchise, according to TooFab.

Hurt. Blinding hurt. It was like somebody hit me in the back of the head with a 2×4… Captain Jack Sparrow was a character I built from the ground up and was something that I, of course, put a lot of [myself] into the character and also having worked on these films with these people and added much of myself, much of my own re-writing of the dialogue and scenes and jokes. I didn’t quite understand how, after that long relationship and quite a successful relationship certainly for Disney, that suddenly I was guilty until proven innocent.

Heard’s lawyers have also been questioning Depp about his drug and alcohol use history, possibly to argue that it was the actor’s own behavior that cost him the role in the franchise. When the libel trial concludes, a jury will decide, but for the time being, the battle continues.
