Bruce Willis is one of the longest-tenured action stars in Hollywood. From Die Hard to The Expendables, Willis has been a staple in big budget movies since the 1980s. That legendary career is now coming to a pause due to a medical condition.

The Willis family announced today that Bruce is suffering from aphasia. The frightening medical condition affects a person’s ability to communicate in both written and verbal language. Aphasia usually stems from trauma such as a head injury or a stroke.

The family noted in a joint statement on their Instagram accounts that Bruce Willis will be stepping away from his acting career. Bruce’s cognitive abilities have already been affected by the condition. Now, he will take time to focus on his health.

“To Bruce’s amazing supporters, as a family we wanted to share that our beloved Bruce has been experiencing some health issues and has recently been diagnosed with aphasia, which is impacting his cognitive abilities. [He will be] stepping away from the career that has meant so much to him.
