Issa Rae has a talent for inserting good tunes in her series, ‘Insecure.’ Obtaining the rights to these songs isn’t simple, but she’s done a good job of navigating the industry. Unfortunately, Rae’s experiences have left her with a foul taste in her mouth about how the music industry works.

The actress and filmmaker discussed why the music industry is such a bad place in an interview with the Los Angeles Times. She chastised the music industry for being exploitative of its musicians.

“It’s probably the worst industry that I have ever come across, I thought Hollywood was crazy. The music industry, it needs to start over. Conflicts of interest abound. Archaic mentalities. Crooks and criminals! It’s an abusive industry, and I really feel for artists that have to come up in it. Being a creator myself and knowing what I want in terms of a relationship with a production company or a producer, I’d like to think that we’re more artist-friendly than a lot of other labels and companies out there. I want to revamp things.”

These are thoughts that have already been voiced, so it should come as no surprise that Rae would feel the same way. After all, creatives are particularly sensitive to being exploited, and Rae, as someone who understands Hollywood inside and out, is well aware of the hazards of any creator-based enterprise.

With her HBO show Insecure, Issa Rae has amassed quite the fortune. While the show’s last season received mixed reviews, viewers were nonetheless eager to see how the Finale would come together.

Let’s see whether the music industry attempts to learn from her comments and ceases being predatory to its musicians.
