Squid Game became a massive hit for Netflix when it debuted earlier in 2021. Fans were thrilled by recent news that the show has been picked up for a second season. The juxtaposition of the kind-hearted lead character, Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae) with the violent, exploitative nature of the narrative struck a nerve with fans.

The connection with Gi-hun left fans heartbroken as the character chose to return for more violent games in the final scene of the opening season. Series writer Hwang Dong-hyuk said the original plan was for Gi-hun to board the flight to see his daughter, now a very rich man. Instead, he made a fateful phone call. Dong-hyuk told Entertainment Weekly that could foreshadow a terrible fate for Gi-hun in season two.

“The question that we want to answer — why has the world come to what it is now? — can only be answered or can only be proposed if Gi-hun turned back and walked towards the camera… I think I am going to stick to the basic story line that I have in mind.”

The South Korean show has earned $900 million for Netflix. It became such a phenomenon that Americans spent more than 3 billion minutes watching the show. Speculation about the fate of the main character has been a hot topic since the show came out.
