Former interim lightweight champion, Dustin Poirier, is eyeing a return to the UFC octagon but hasn’t set a specific timeline for his comeback. However, he’s expressed great interest in competing on the promotion’s historic UFC 300 card, slated for April 2024.

While speaking with MMA Fighting, Poirier indicated that he aims to bounce back from a second-round knockout loss to Justin Gaethje in the main event of UFC 291, where they fought for the “BMF” title. Poirier is open to fighting in six to eight weeks if the right opportunity arises, but the prospect of participating in UFC 300 holds special appeal for him. He has been with the UFC since UFC 125 and missed the opportunity to fight on UFC 200, making UFC 300 an enticing possibility.

“My current mindset, I’d fight in six weeks, I’d fight in eight weeks if the fight made sense and I was excited about it,. I’ve been in the UFC since UFC 125 and I missed 200. I know I’m not gonna be around for 400, so it’s kind of a cool opportunity if it comes together, but I honestly have no clue of my my return date or time frame, but UFC 300 is enticing.”

The lightweight division is currently in an intriguing state with Islam Makhachev as the champion and contenders like Gaethje and Charles Oliveira competing for a title shot. Poirier remains confident in his position in the division, feeling that not much has changed over the years.

He sees himself as a consistent top-10 or top-five fighter with a track record that proves his caliber. Poirier’s debut fight in the UFC was against the number one contender at the time, and he’s consistently been in the mix for the biggest fights.

When Poirier returns to compete, it will mark his 30th fight in the UFC. With an impressive resume that includes interim gold, multiple title shots, and victories over Conor McGregor, he is focused on continuing to bring excitement to the octagon and adding to his list of achievements.

While he doesn’t predict the future, Poirier is committed to maintaining his growth, remaining a student of the sport, and delivering thrilling fights for fans in the years ahead.
