Netflix users have long relied on a clever trick to get around paying for the service. This technique, of course, is password sharing, in which multiple users log in to Netflix using the same account. With that being said, Netflix is currently changing password-sharing guidelines in four countries to reduce such ingenious methods.

Netflix released new password-sharing policies on Wednesday and these guidelines and charges will first be applied to users in Canada, New Zealand, Portugal, and Spain. Users in those nations will be asked to choose a “primary location” for their Netflix account and two “subaccounts” can be created for users who don’t reside at the main address.

However, a monthly charge per sub-account will be applied. The monthly cost in Canada will be CA$ 7.99 and for New Zealand, it will be NZ$7.99. Portugal will charge a monthly fee of 3.99 euros. Finally, Spain will impose a monthly charge of 5.99 euros. According to its director of product innovation, Chengyi Long,

“Today, over 100 million households are sharing accounts — impacting our ability to invest in great new TV and films.”

Prior to its anticipated March 2023 domestic launch in the US, the company is testing its new policies. The announcement from Netflix will be implemented right away, along with a brand-new “Manage Access and Devices” page. Users will be able to control who has access to their assigned accounts through this.

Users who want to avoid paying the extra monthly fee for “subaccounts” can move their profiles over to new accounts created by those who previously had access. The new account management page will be revised and improved, according to Netflix, based on customer feedback from the four nations that will act as the testing ground. Due to a significant decline in the number of subscribers for its fourth quarter, Netflix has chosen to make this modification. Keep an eye on Thirsty For News to get more updates.
