Kenan Thompson has been a cast member of the NBC sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live since 2003. Thompson also appeared in the Mighty Ducks franchise, Good Burger, and as the title character in the 2004 film Fat Albert. Thompson recently provided an exciting update on the possibility of the long-awaited Good Burger 2 finally happening.

Good Burger, which starred Thompson and Kel Mitchell as a pair of fun-loving teenage restaurant employees, was based on a sketch from the Nickelodeon show All That. The film’s Nickelodeon origins are a big part of why Good Burger has such a special place in the hearts of many 1990s kids. Despite receiving negative reviews from critics, Good Burger was a modest success, grossing $23 million against a $8.5 million budget.

The possibility of Good Burger 2 finally hitting theatres was raised by star Thompson during his recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. In an encouraging sign for fans, Thompson revealed that the sequel is in the works.

“No, we are, you know, working harder on it than — than ever. So it’s about, you know, meeting the numbers, letting the numbers match up, ’cause I need them numbers. You know what I’m talking about.”

Thompson’s remarks to Fallon are clearly sarcastic. At the same time, there’s more than a grain of truth in his humourous observation that “the numbers,” aka money, played a big role in getting Good Burger 2 made (money is a big factor in the making of all movies). Of course, die-hard Good Burger fans are aware that there was a sort of sequel in the form of a 1998 novel titled Good Burger 2 Go, in which Thompson and Mitchell’s characters embarked on a globe-trotting adventure.

Any Good Burger sequel made today, however, is unlikely to follow the plot of this long-forgotten 1998 novel. For starters, the original film’s stars are much older now, and their characters would almost certainly have to be reworked, much like Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves’ characters were for the recent legacy sequel Bill and Ted Face the Music.

Given the film’s enduring status as a cult classic, it’s not surprising that talk of a Good Burger 2 comes up from time to time. To get the latest updates, keep an eye on Thirsty.
