A 29-year-old California man passed away on Monday after suffering severe injuries in a brawl on the pitch. Misael Sanchez had been hospitalized since July 10th, when he was beaten by multiple members of the opposing team and spectators during a match at Oxnard High School. The incident started over a disagreement with a referee’s call.

Multiple people attacked Sanchez in the melee. EMS arrived and found him unresponsive and not breathing. He was rushed to Ventura County Medical Center, where he was in critical condition.

The Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office has not released a cause of death. An autopsy is scheduled for today. One man has been arrested in connection with the attack.

46-year-old Berlin Jose Melgara was arrested by Oxnard police. He has been charged with felony battery. Authorities believe they will make more arrests of others who were involved.
