Ghostbusters has been a pop culture institution since the mid-1980s. The long-running comedy has had the spotlight in the form of movies, cartoons, comic books, and a massive array of merchandise for decades. After the success of the recent reboot by Jason Reitman, Netflix is looking to cash in on the series’ popularity.

Variety has reported that a new Ghostbusters animated series is in production for the streaming giant. Jason Reitman will return to serve as executive producer. Jason’s father, Ivan Reitman, produced and directed the original 1984 hit that started it all.

There are no details on the exact plot of the new Ghostbusters cartoon. No writers have been hired. The ball is just starting to get rolling on the project.

This would be the third animated series in the history of the Ghostbusters franchise. ‘The Real Ghostbusters’ ran for 140 episodes between 1986 and 1991 and caused a sensation among American kids. ‘Extreme Ghostbusters’ followed with less success, but an equally massive marketing campaign.

The film became a classic and was followed by a sequel in 1989 as well as a 2014 all-female reboot and 2021’s ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife.’

More Ghostbusters news from Jason Reitman is expected to follow as fans celebrate Ghostbusters Day. Time will tell what he has in store. Fans of the beloved franchise have a lot to look forward to.
