A viral video of a boxer punching the air after suffering a mid-bout brain injury has resulted in tragedy. A 24-year-old fighter who was competing in South Africa was shockingly caught on video trying to punch the air after he suffered several blows to the head. Sadly, Simiso Buthelezi has passed away due to his injuries.

The social media video shows the moments leading up to Buthelezi’s reaction. He pushed his opponent, Siphesihle Mntungwa into the ropes. At that point, the referee separated the two pugilists.

After being reset, Buthelezi turned in the direction of the referee. The official then moved out of the way. Finally, Buthelezi started punching wildly into the air.

The match was stopped shortly after. Simiso Buthelezi was transported to a local hospital. There, it was discovered that he was suffering from bleeding on his brain. He was placed into a medically induced coma.

The terrible incident happened in the final minute of the bout, which was scheduled for ten rounds. The WBA Africa lightweight championship was on the line. Buthelezi had been untouched for most of the fight.

Simiso Buthelezi recently graduated from university, where he studied botany and zoology. He was in full control of the fight at the time the injury manifested itself. It was a tragic end to a promising young life.
