Tom Brady called off his retirement in March very soon after the announcement. Since then fans have wondered what caused this change of heart in the 44-year-old quarterback, after he announced his retirement in the early February. Brady finally shed some insight into that decision.

The seven-time Super Bowl champion spoke to PEOPLE and explained that there wasn’t merely one thing that made him return to his beloved sport but several other factors as well.

“I just felt like there was still a lot of competitiveness — for me to want to engage with my teammates, to give it another shot,” Brady said.

“The challenging part was the timing of everything because the team needs some answers and we were going into free agency and it was like, ‘Alright, what’s the decision?’ and I said, ‘Okay, let’s just make sure everything is good where it needs to be with my personal life and give it a go,’ ” he explains. “It’s a big commitment … I have to make sure I take care of a lot of other things in the meantime.”

Brady spoke with the outlet while playing golf at the IWC Schaffhausen Big Pilot Challenge. He also mentioned that before he returns to the field he will be spending time with his wife and three kids in the offseason.

As the fans gear up to see their beloved quarterback in NFL’s 23rd season, there exists a looming uncertainty concerning the longevity of his return. It remains to be seen how long Brady stays on the field but we do hope he finds the balance he seeks to maintain in his life.
