Will Smith delivered the slap heard around the world at this year’s Oscars. A joke by Chris Rock sent Will from his seat to the stage, where he slapped Rock and then verbally warned him to never mention his wife again. Rock had joked about Jada Pinkett Smith’s bald head. Jada took umbrage with the comment, and Smith attempted to defend her.

The crowd cheered after the now-infamous slapping incident. Jim Carrey thought it was a terrible way to react. The comic actor said the behavior of the audience was disgraceful.

Jim Carrey referred to the audience as “spineless” during an appearance with Gayle King on CBS. Carrey believes stars act hypocritically. Jim also advocated for Chris Rock to sue Will Smith.

“I was sickened. I was sickened by the standing ovation. I felt like Hollywood is just spineless en masse. It really felt like this is a really clear indication that we’re not the cool club anymore.”

Jim said the event overshadowed a lot of deserving winners on Oscar night. The actor believes there were plenty of other ways to settle the dispute. Violence was at the bottom of his list.

The Academy released a statement noting that they do not condone violence of any form. The same body then went on to give Will Smith an award on the same night. Jim Carrey thinks the entire situation was a black eye on the movie industry.
