Kelly Rowland recently shared a very personal and touching story during her guest-hosting sting on “Today.” The former Destiny’s Child singer went thirty years without speaking to her father. Hip hop mogul Jay-Z was the one who got the ball rolling for the two to eventually reconnect.

Kelly said it was advice from Jay-Z that made her make the call. Kelly Rowland had previously been raised by a single mother. Her father made the decision early on that he wasn’t ready for parenthood.

In a 2018 chat with Jay-Z, Kelly said she received the advice that made her finally decide to reach out. The rapper told her that love is all about risk. You either take one, or you miss out.

“He said, ‘Love is all about risk. You gotta decide if you’re gonna jump.’ You gonna jump?’ That’s what he asked me: ‘Are you gonna jump?’”

Kelly’s mother passed away in 2014. After giving birth to her first son, Titan, Kelly realized that she still had some family left. The two met at a hotel in Atlanta and talked for hours. Kelly said that she learned that nobody is perfect. Rowland gave her father some grace.

Kelly Rowland’s father, Christopher Lovett, was thrilled to finally reconnect with his long-lost daughter. The two have a ton of catching up to do after thirty years apart. It was all because of some simple advice from Jay-Z.
