A soccer game in Mexico this weekend broke into a brawl among spectators. Many have appeared to be on the approach of death as a result of their various violent attacks.

TMZ reports that this happened in central Mexico on Saturday, between Queretaro (the hosts) and Atlas from Guadalajara, with the latter wearing red/black jerseys. Several fights broke out in the seats during the 62nd minute of the game, spilling onto the field and prompting the referees to pause the game and sending stadium staff scurrying for rescue. Several videos have surfaced, many of which are too violent to put here, revealing the cruelty that was taking place.

There are clips of various groups of guys beating up on one or more people and pummeling them with punches, kicks, and hits with things such as chairs and rods. A large number of the victims were also nearly naked and unconscious. Many of these folks were assumed dead, understandably, so, given what they saw, and unsubstantiated reports from Mexico fueled that speculation, even more, alleging many fatalities as a result of the brawl.

The governor of Queretaro’s official line is that no one died as a result of the incident but that up to 26 people were hospitalized, with a few in critical condition. There were families with children hiding for their life and some eyewitness stories claim that parents were forced to remove their children’s jerseys out of fear of a rival fan attacking them.

Liga MX, the league in which these two teams compete, suspended the rest of the weekend’s games and denounced the violence, saying they would begin a complete investigation and pledge to hold anyone guilty accountable, including venue owners. There’s a lot of complaining going on, between security and the brawlers themselves, who let a feud turn into a life-or-death crisis.

Some are even calling for FIFA to take Mexico’s hosting status away in 2026, citing the poisonous fanbase that exists as an example of why it might not be safe for visiting teams, spectators, and so on. However, one thing is undeniable, this league must, at the very least, clean up its act, because this is completely unacceptable.
