Donald Trump called Vladimir Putin a “genius” just after the start of his unprovoked invasion of Ukraine. Trump has been cushy with Putin in the past and directly requested Russia to dig up dirt on Hillary Clinton on national television during the 2016 election. There is no question that The Donald has a soft spot for strong man dictators.

Putin’s invasion has been met with international condemnation. Countries around the globe have stood united in the face of unwarranted aggression. United States President Joe Biden recently announced stiff sanctions against Russia.

Donald Trump now says that the invasion would never have happened if he were still president. Trump also drummed up more fervor over his lies about a stolen election in the process. The disgraced former president spoke at the far-right affiliated CPAC conference where he discussed his thoughts.

“The problem is not that Putin is smart – which of course, he’s smart – but the real problem is that our leaders are dumb. They’ve so far allowed him to get away with this travesty and an assault on humanity.

He understood me and he understood that I didn’t play games. This would not have happened. Someday, I’ll tell you exactly what we talked about. And he did have an affinity, there’s no question about it, for Ukraine. I said, never let it happen, better not let it happen.”

Trump’s tough talk doesn’t seem to be in lockstep with his previous kind words for Putin. The Donald seems to be playing it up for whatever audience he is speaking to. Trump has gone from calling Putin a genius for his invasion to condemning it in less than a week. It doesn’t sound like he has any real agenda other than getting himself some cheers.
