Rihanna is coming off an incredible 2021. Her native Barbados recognized the “Umbrella” singer as a national hero. Riri also announced that she was taking her Savage x Fenty lingerie brand to retail. Very few things could knock Rihanna from the wave she rode into 2022.

An insensitive social media photo depicting Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wearing gold grills on his teeth has come under major fire from fans. Rihanna had the digitally altered picture as her Twitter banner photo. Many responded with their thoughts on what they thought was a tone-deaf attempt at humor.

“SMH. The disrespect. She’s too old for this sh*t, there’s no excuse.”

“Dear: @rihanna This is disrespectful. Take it down. As a non African American you have no idea what this man meant to us. He gave his life for ours.”

“MLK didn’t wear gold teeth and earrings…it’s disrespectful to Foundational Black Americans”

“Hey @rihanna could you change your banner doesn’t show MLK in good taste.”

Dr. King was a major leader in the American civil rights movement. The rights of millions of Americans were paid for with King’s life and the sacrifices of those who answered his call. Rihanna was just trying to make a joke. Fans didn’t think it was in good taste at all.
