Clay Aiken stole the hearts of American Idol fans when he competed on the reality competition in 2003. Aiken became an all-time favorite contestant among Idol fans. Clay is looking to show that he’s got more than just a great voice.

Aiken ran for Congress in his home state of North Carolina in 2014. Clay made it as far as the general election then but ultimately lost the race. Now he’s back for a political encore.

Clay released a video announcing his candidacy for Congress on YouTube. Aiken will run as a democrat. The singer said he hopes to drown out the hateful voices that have held a vice grip over a segment of American political thought.

As Democrats, we have got to get better at speaking up and using our voices. [The extreme right] ain’t quieting down anytime soon. If the loudest and most hateful voices think they’re gonna speak for us, just tell them I’m warming up the old vocal chords.”

Clay Aiken is not the only television celebrity running for office during this election cycle. Dr. Oz is attempting to earn a Senate seat in Pennsylvania. Oz is running as a Republican.

If his longshot campaign is successful, Clay Aiken will be the first openly gay member of Congress from the south. The race currently has at least ten other candidates. Several of them have far better political bona fides than Aiken. Time will tell if he will be taken seriously by the voting public.
