Kanye West is widely regarded as a perfectionist. His obsession borders on control freak status. That includes everyone’s behavior in the studio. He runs a tight ship, from dress code to cell phone use. Big Sean knows those rules the hard way.

In the days before the recording sessions for Donda, Ye posted signs in the studio forbidding several acts. Tweeting was not allowed in the studio. Hipster hats were also banned. West expected those fortunate enough to sit in on the sessions to adhere to a code of secrecy.

Big Sean wasn’t immune to Kanye’s draconian rules. He recently talked to N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN on Drink Champs. There, Sean shared a story of how Jay-Z and Kanye wanted him to fire his friend after sharing a photo from a studio session on social media.

“We down there working on “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” in Hawaii. I’m out there playing my role, but I brought my mans with me in case I needed anything. He was going to help hold me down… It’s good to have a support system, to have one of your homies there when you trying to contribute.

So anyway, I’m in a studio — it was me, Ye and Hov. Even then, I wasn’t trying to be thirsty or sneak a f*cking picture. I’m here just taking it in mentally. He ends up taking a picture of all of us in the studio. Didn’t tell me. He ends up tweeting it and it gets picked up on AllHipHop and things like that…

When we talked about, I told them, ‘I don’t even know what the f*ck you’re talking about.’ I explained to [Kanye] who it was and he was like, ‘You gotta f*cking fire him. We’ve all done this, we’ve hired the people that we love. But people were mad at you thinking that you were being thirsty. And it was your mans.’”

Big Sean said the friend went on to become a teacher. He stated that the incident was a blessing in disguise. His friend is now doing bigger and better things and is more successful than he might have been if he stuck with music.

Kanye West only wants the best when it comes time to put his name on a product. His rules may seem extremely strict. For Kanye, it’s all in the name of perfection.
