What is referred to in Basketball as a ‘margin of victory’ is something to write home about. Especially when a record-breaking margin of victory is achieved by any one team in the NBA. Such an occurrence happened last night in the game pitting the Memphis Grizzlies and the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The Grizzlies defeated the Thunder by a whopping 152-79 and in Tennessee to boot. The previous margin of victory record in the NBA dates back an astonishing 20 years – minus 14 days. The last time this happened was specifically on December 17th of 1991 when the Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the Miami Heat by an equally whopping 148-80, as CNN reports.

Coach for the Grizzlies, Taylor Jenkins, had some proud words for the press following the game. He stated:

“Franchise records are obviously great and I’m proud of our guys that they don’t think about that. We’re just motivated by our standards every single night and tonight that was on full display offensively and defensively. Records are records and records are meant to be broken. What motivates us every day is just playing our best basketball, and I think over the last three games we’ve done a great job of that.”

Sadly, coach for the Oklahoma City Thunder was defeated and in his demeanor as well following the game. He stated:

“Tonight is not necessarily who we are. I think we’ve definitely shown that from a competitive standpoint – this isn’t indicative of who our team is. Competition comes with great joy, and it also comes with grief and frustration and anger…It’s why the joy feels so good because, when you get punched and you taste your own blood, it doesn’t feel right.”

The Grizzlies are currently 5th in the Western Conference and this win and breaking of such a long-standing record should serve as quite the boost for the team, many are thinking. It seems as though their head is in the right spot right now, but they have lost 2 out of their last 5 games.

They face the Mavericks tomorrow at 8:30 PM EST. The last time the two teams faced off, which was back in May, the Grizzlies came out victorious in a 133 to 104 win. We’ll have to see if they can keep up their momentum. The breaking of the aforementioned record should certainly help.
