The Sopranos is a legendary television series. Running from 1999 through 2007, the Mafia drama built strong connections between fans and its characters. It’s considered one of the greatest TV shows of all time.

Edie Falco, who played James Gandolfini‘s TV wife, recently shared a hilarious story about the production of the show with The Guardian. During scenes where their characters were required to eat, Edie would fake it. James Gandolfini, however, actually ate. Once, he went way overboard.

“We learned tricks so it looked like we were eating, but we weren’t. But Jim ate in every frigging take, and he ate between takes. There was one scene we were shooting, where he was eating a bowl of ice-cream, and in every take he ate and would then re-fill the bowl, and then at one point,

I realised he’s not really listening to me – he had gone into a sugar coma! We had to stop and shoot the rest of the scene another day. He was like a five-year-old: ‘The ice-cream is good, I like it!’ I was like, ‘You gotta stop, you’re gonna get sick!’”

James Gandolfini’s decision to legitimately eat on-set may have added to the character’s relatability in the long run. On that day, however, he overdid it. Wonder if he was blowing takes on purpose just for the free ice cream?

HBO Max has been pursuing a possible Soprano’s prequel series. While James Gandolfini passed away in 2013, a younger version of the character would surely be included. Maybe a different Tony Soprano will shut down shooting because of his apetite some time in the future. Fans can only hope.
