The Iowa high school basketball game between Nevada and Calisle ended in an ugly manner on Tuesday night. Nevada won 72-47, but the basketball wasn’t the big story of the evening. As the teams exchanged handshakes after the game, a player from Carlisle threw a punch.

Another punch followed. One landed in the abdomen, and one hit the player in the face. The Nevada player fell into a teammate. The teammate then wrestled the Carlisle player to the hardwood.

Video of the fight emerged on social media. The 9 second clip doesn’t show any potential reason for the assault. As the Carlisle player is on the ground and players from both teams attempt to break up the fight, the video cuts off.

Nevada starts their season 1-0, while Carlisle drops to 0-2. The records hardly matter, though. The game wasn’t even competitive. The assault accomplishes nothing other than a blemish on the school.

The chaotic scene is becoming all too common in sports culture. Fights in the bleachers frequently break out among adults at professional sports games. It’s no wonder that some teenagers are so quick to resort to violence.

The reason for the fight is not known. Given the fact that these are high school student athletes, it could be anything from an old grudge to relationship issues. Carlisle may have just been sick of getting pushed around on the court.
