Pusha T announced earlier this week that his mother passed away. An Instagram post by Pusha on November 10 memorialized Mildred Thornton. The cause of her death is unknown. Pusha T shared a slideshow of photos and videos of the precious time she got to spend with his son, Nigel.

The rap community came out in force to support the grieving Clipse member. An all-star roster of hip-hop shared their condolences. Among them were Pharrell, Wale, 2 Chainz, and Swizz Beatz, and The-Dream.

According to XXL, Mildred grew up in Virginia Beach, VA. She was a post office employee. Her husband worked at a pharmaceutical lab. Pusha T and brother No Malice were both born in the Bronx. Their mother then relocated the family to Virginia Beach, where the two made it big together.

Pusha T strived to take care of his mother. He even rapped about it in 2015’s “Crutches, Crosses, Caskets.” He was proud to give her a life she couldn’t have otherwise dreamed of. In the song, he includes a verse about sending her on a vacation to the Bahamas.

Pusha was just returning the favors his mother gave him, if only in some small part. He told Sway in 2014 that about a time when his mother caught him selling drugs. He said that the disappointment he caused them made him straighten his life out.

We join the entire hip-hop nation in sending our condolences to Pusha T and Malice. It’s obvious he was close with his mother. She influenced him through his music and his life. Her legacy will live on.
