Cain Velasquez, two-time UFC heavyweight champion, made his debut in WWE during the first episode of Friday Night Smackdown on FOX back in 2019. He immediately began a feud with Brock Lesnar, who was the WWE Champion at the time. However, his run in the company turned out to be very short and not memorable whatsoever.
His first and only televised WWE match was at Crown Jewel 2019 in Saudi Arabia where Lesnar defeated him in a little over two minutes. Cain Velasquez also admitted that he needed more time to develop himself in WWE.
Cain Velasquez squared off against Brock Lesnar at UFC 121, where he defeated Lesnar for UFC heavyweight championship. It seems this loss might have affected Lesnar’s relationship with Velasquez.
While speaking with The MMA Hour, Cain Velasquez talked about his run in WWE. Velasquez stated that he believes his win over Lesnar at UFC 121 created some friction between them in WWE.
“There’s always going to be friction with that. So yeah, there was, but working together… We didn’t work much, but talking to him just for that little bit, I just know where he comes from, just from that little time spent, and I mean very little. I know what he’s about, and I respect him for that. What you see out there when he performs, all that s**t, he lives it, he breathes it. That’s him. That persona that you see, that’s him out there. That’s his true self. Close quarters, he’s obviously more human, but that’s him, and I saw that.”
Cain Velasquez was released last year as part of WWE’s COVID-19 budget cuts in April. Many fans were furious at his release. However, Velasquez made it clear he doesn’t hold any grudges regarding his release.
