Jay-Z testified as a witness today in a lawsuit against him by Parlux Fragrances. The company is suing Jigga because they believe he failed to fulfill an agreement to promot his Gold Jay-Z line of cologne.

Rolling Stone reported on the proceedings, which were described as testy. Jay-Z responded to tough questions about the wording of his contract. He defended the work he did for Parlux.

“I did a lot for the Gold Jay-Z launch. I had a year to complete these, correct? I don’t know if you answered my question. I had a year to complete these right?”

The lawyer for Parlux snapped back, informing the defendant that he was there to answer questions, not to ask them. The testimony then moved to whether the rapper had even read the contract to determine his personal obligations to the company. Jay-Z deferred to his lawyers in the handling of such matters.

The suit was filed by Parlux in 2016. The company said Hova earned $2 million in royalties but lost $18 million in the deal. They stated that Jay-Z failed to make several promised public appearances to promote the fragrances.

Parlux has also accused Jay of stealing. They produced an 18-karat gold bottle design that the the rapper rejected. The bottle was worth $20,000. Jay-Z kept the bottle, according to the suit.

Jay-Z then countersued. He accused the company of not providing him with adequate resources to meet his obligations. He also says the company owes him an additional $2.7 million in royalties.
