Grey’s Anatomy is currently one of the longest-running television shows out there, with its 17th season having ended a while ago. The show made its debut in 2005 and was a smash hit with fans and critics alike. It remains ABC’s most popular drama.

Throughout its duration, the show has featured several characters being killed off or actors leaving the show. It was reported earlier that fan-favorite Jesse Williams confirmed that he will be leaving the show and that happened on an important episode of the show. On top of that, even Greg Germann left the show as a series regular.

Kate Walsh was reported to be making her return to the show for its 18th season, much to the delight of fans. Sandra Oh left the show many years ago and made it clear she is never coming back.

Katherine Heigl, who portrayed the role of Izzie Stevens on the show, left it back in 2010. While speaking on How to Save a Life: The Inside Story of Grey’s Anatomy, Katherine Heigl opened up about her departure from the show. She admitted it wasn’t a smooth transition and added that fans calling her ‘ungrateful’ after her exit was partly her fault.

“I started a family, and it changed everything. It changed my desire to work full-time. I went on family leave…and just got to be a mom, and it changed my whole perspective…that was really the turning point.

So before I was due back, I spoke again to Shonda about wanting to leave. Then I waited at home until I was given the formal okay that I was off the show. The rumors that I refused to return were totally untrue. “[Shonda] wanted to try to figure out how I could do both [parenting and Grey’s], and I kind of wanted to do both,” Katherine explained. “There wasn’t a great way to compromise the work schedule that didn’t negatively affect the crew or the cast. It wasn’t feeling fair to them or the show to ask them to bend around my needs.

“The ‘ungrateful’ thing bothers me the most. And that is my fault. I allowed myself to be perceived that way. So much about living life, to me, is about humility and gratitude. And I’ve tried very hard to have those qualities and be that person, and I’m just so disappointed in myself that I allowed it to slip.”

Season 18 will be starting on September 30 and we will have to wait and see how it will fare compared to the previous seasons.
