2018’s Aquaman starring Jason Mamoa as Aquaman/Arthur Curry had a tremendous reception, both critically and commercially and was touted as one of the best films produced under the DCEU banner. It has earned over $1.1 billion at the worldwide box office, making it the most successful DCEU film currently.

The sequel to the film, Aquaman 2, will see Mamoa reprise his role of Arthur Curry and also Amber Heard will be returning to portray Meera, which fans certainly aren’t too happy about. Willem Dafoe is also likely to return as Vulko.

Now it seems fans finally know when the sequel will start filming. While speaking on The Drew Barrymore Show, Jason Mamoa revealed that he is involved in writing the script for the upcoming film and also that filming for the sequel will begin in July this year.

After we ended the first one I went in with my writing partner and we dreamed up the second one and we went in and pitched the idea. The best thing I can give you is that I love it so much that I participated in the writing of it. And so, we did the first treatment and then James and our original writer David finished it off. And all of our hearts are in it. Instead of just like getting a script and doing that, you are 100% being encouraged by your director and co-writers. So that’s exciting for me and I’m excited to go over there. I leave in July and we start filming

Amber Heard has already started hitting the gym in preparation for the upcoming sequel film. The film is slated to release in December of 2022 and we will have to see if it will far surpass the original in every way.
