Gossip Girl remains an absolute favorite for many, even after the show concluded almost ten years ago. A sequel has been in the works for quite some time now and it is slated to release this year.

The sequel will feature an all-new cast of characters and now more details have been revealed. According to the cast’s Cosmopolitan May/June 2021 cover story, it was revealed that the show will HBO Max in July of this year, but no exact date was given. The sequel series was initially scheduled to air in the fall of 2020, but production was delayed earlier in the year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to Variety, the series is filming in New York, Los Angeles, and Vancouver. Cast members for the upcoming sequel include Eli Brown, Whitney Peak, Evan Mock, Zión Moreno, Thomas Doherty, Jordan Alexander, Savannah Lee Smith, and Tavi Gevinson.

According to Deadline, the story is set to take place in the same universe as the original series.

“Eight years after the original website went dark, a new generation of New York private school teens are introduced to the social surveillance of Gossip Girl. The prestige series will address just how much social media — and the landscape of New York itself — has changed in the intervening years.”

While plot details are scarce, showrunner Joshua Safran told Cosmopolitan in April 2021 that there will be a big “twist” in the series.

“My hope is that we make it to airing and people don’t know.  would love to see that conversation happen in the context of people having seen it as opposed to talking about something they haven’t seen.”

Regarding the possible return of the original cast members, only Kristin Bell is set to return as she will be narrating the upcoming sequel as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. We will have to see how the sequel series will turn out to be and whether it will be a worthy successor to the original.
